Whether you’re attending a final round interview or having a brief chat about the role via phone, it is always wise to follow up afterwards; the easiest way is to send a thank you email.
“It keeps the conversation flowing,” according to Gillian Scanlan, Azon’s Accounting and Finance recruiter. “While you might only be taking one minute out of your day to send your gratitude on to the company, it can have a big impact for your reputation with the hiring committee, and speaks positively to your character.”
The ideal time to send this is within 24 hours of finishing your interview, particularly for early rounds. “It can help to combat competition if there are many candidates. If it bumps you to the top of my inbox, I am more likely to get back to you first,” says Gillian.
Another advantage of sending a thank you email is that it works as a conversation kick-starter. “It opens the door for dialogue even if you don’t get the job,” Gilllian reveals. “In this case, sometimes recruiters reach back out to candidates on the same email thread weeks later, revealing new job opportunities. It will help to ensure you get the most from your experience.”
