The Company Secretarial market is a hive of activity at present, with signs pointing toward a continued upward trajectory in both demand and supply for strong Company Secretarial professionals.
The current CoSec market
I attended the 2018 ICSA Ireland Conference two weeks ago in Dublin Castle and found myself regularly having the same conversation with experienced Company Secretaries regarding the growth in the space, but also the demand to meet the growth. While awareness of the merits of a career in corporate governance is increasing we are seeing that there is still a shortage in the supply of experienced CoSec’s looking to make a move. It’s a candidate driven market and in my opinion, is just the calm before the storm as more young professionals turn to a career in corporate governance.
“Such is the demand for students who are qualified in management and corporate governance over the past few years that over 90% of successful students have gained graduate level jobs.” (Ulster University, 2018)
Who is taking the Company Secretarial route?
From speaking to the market, I’ve noticed undergraduates/recent graduates that would have previously been considering careers as Solicitors, Barristers and other professions further afield making the conscious decision to pursue the professional qualification as Associate of the ICSA (ACIS). The MSc in Management & Corporate Governance from Ulster University has carved out a clear path to becoming a Company Secretary, and the availability of a part-time course in Marino Institute in Dublin has made it even more accessible. We’re even seeing a common trend where organisations are facilitating ICSA qualification for employees and/or new hires interested in becoming qualified.
Events such as the ICSA Conference and the work being done behind the scenes in colleges and workshops around the country, help to showcase the benefit of a career as a Company Secretary. The conference itself is a prime example of the growth. Since the first Conference in 2016, it has grown from 50 delegates to 200+ this year with no sign of it slowing down. I was blown away by how well organised the event was, the level of attendance and the list of phenomenal speakers they had on the day. It was a great event and I look forward to seeing the continued rise and evolution of future ICSA Ireland Conference’s. The growth of which goes hand in hand with the rise in popularity of the profession.
